Now that you rented your storage space, how will you pack everything? Here are a list of supplies you will need to ensure your items are packed in the best way possible.

1. Get boxes, any size

make sure they are not too old that they would deteriorate while stored for a duration of time.

2. If you are packing fragile items, do not forget BUBBLE WRAP!

New ADA Regulations March 15th!

Recently I read an article describing how the up-and-coming ADA changes and revisions will affect the a lot industries including storage.

March 15th (tomorrow) will require newly constructed commercial businesses and renovations to current businesses must be in compliance with the 2010 ADA regulations.

For the storage owners that means that 5% of the first 200 units must be wheelchair accessible and 2% of units after the first 200. If you plan on constructing or renovating after tomorrow then you need to comply with the newest regulations.

However, for property that was previously constructed that already complies with the original law you will be “grandfathered in”. Most these regulations have been around for a number of years so just as long as you are constructing and/or renovating up to these standards you will be all set.

Everyone has been aware these regulations were coming but now they are almost here!

College storage made simple!

Freshman college students normally are dropped off by their parents because they want to say goodbye to the children but also because those students bring a lot of stuff and need multiple cars to haul it in!

If those students are moving quite far away from home, that “stuff” needs to go somewhere during those summer months. Some choose to continually move their items back and forth between home and school.

Some others choose to put their belongings into self storage. This has been a fantastic idea for students and parents. Not only do you not have to worry about hauling you things multiple times throughout the year, you’ll also have the satisfaction that your items are safe and secure.

Just a food-for-thought on this Friday afternoon.

Auction Entrance Fee?

I recently read a very interesting discussion about storage companies charging an entry fee for auctions. Quite a few comments concluded to saying that it was not a good idea and it would deter all buyers from coming or ever coming back.

Others mentioned that it actually helped to bring in the “true” buyers. Being said, it also could frustrate buyers who pay this fee and then end up purchasing nothing from the auction.

How would you feel if you were charged at an storage auction or actually any auction for that matter? Even though you didn’t know what items were up for auction but knew they were still good quality, then would you pay?

It’s finally 2012! Do you plan on sell your house this year? With the real estate market still being where it is at, people are doing everything they possibly can to sell their homes. Some homeowners will consider staging as an option to sell their home, but what do you do with all of your belongings? (Store them!)

By using the hashtag #StorChat your comments will then filter into a conversation all about storage. This “chatroom” will allow to you converse about storage without the interruption of any other tweets.

This wonderful and quite informative meetup has been happening since the beginning of September. (I stumbled upon it doing some research recently and just had to share this with all of you).

Think twice before storing these items...

At the beginning of the week we covered the items you definitely should not be storing in a storage facility. This post is going to cover the items you really should think twice about storing. If the items are that important to you maybe find a place in your house to use them or possibly think of selling the items.

These items you should think twice about storing:

Perfumes or fragrances - could easily break and could possibly create an unbearable odor throughout the unit

Photographs - unless you are in a climate controlled unit, extreme temperatures could have undesirable effects to your memories

Perishable food - this might seem like common sense but if you are moving you might just put “everything” from the kitchen into boxes. Can goods might be okay depending upon how long you plan on storing your items.

Equipment storage - you can store “most” equipment but always remember to drain all fluids from the equipment first

Fireworks
Explosives (of any kind)
Propane tanks
Toxic materials
Animal Products
(Anything) illegal by state or federal law

Okay, so we have all heard of plastic storage containers, bins or totes. There are so many uses for them one would wonder, “What should I be considering before purchasing one.” The following information includes a few tips on considering what one should consider before purchasing a plastic storage container.

What am I planning on storing?

Don’t purchase storage bins just because they are on sale. You should truly consider what you plan on storing and how large of a bin (container) you will actually need. Being economical and prepared is something that will go a long way in your storage future.

Color

This is important because the color of the storage container can help your quickly identify your items. For example, if you have all clear storage containers then you would be able to see all of your items quickly. Or if you storage containers where color coded for each room they come from or what holiday decorations are stored in them, it will help you cut down on time searching for items.

Shape of the container

This is a very crucial consideration, especially if you are going to be storing in a storage unit. You should stay consistent with your choice of storage containers. (In most) storage facilities you will most likely be stacking a few or all of your items. Remembering this consideration will help in the long run to have more room in your storage unit.
